The Challenge...

Behind a traditional Georgian façade in Marylebone, Beyond the Invisible have installed a comprehensive whole house entertainment system, home cinema, lighting control, door entry, a data/telephony network and easy computer access via TV screens. The project shows the convergence of entertainment and computer systems.

As well as the usual UK based entertainment the clients wanted French radio and up to date financial information. In addition they were sensitive to noise and their architect was concerned about electro-magnetic radiation so all lighting, computer and entertainment systems were centralised.

Entertainment

Twelve zones of audio and video are distributed via two Speakercraft multi-room entertainment systems. Sources include a DVD player, Sky box and Tuner together with a Hotbird satellite receiver for foreign language broadcasts.

A four output Marantz hard disk music server provides access to digital music in any of the rooms.

The installed plasma screens are able to show many different sources as shown on the left. This includes satellite TV both from Sky and French Satellite channels, the music on the hard disk music server, DVD and CCTV cameras.

Period Building Constraints

The clients wanted a quality cinema but didn’t want to see it when not in use. Speakercraft AIM 8 Ceiling speakers aim the sound towards the listening position from all seven speakers. The projector screen is hidden behind the ceiling coving. Not only is the building listed but there is a ship’s beam across the room making an in-ceiling drop down projector screen out of the question.

The projector is mounted in a custom made cabinet, with a top door which moves vertically upwards whenever triggered by the projector. We designed the cabinet in conjunction with the cabinet makers at Wabi Sabi

Lighting Control

Lighting throughout the property is controlled by the Clipsal C-Bus system. Glass fronted Saturn switches are used exclusively throughout the property. In some locations Clipsal's DLT switches are used, these incorporate a small LCD screen which enables the function of the key to be labelled. If the client wants to change the function of a key it is a simple matter to change the label in software. A touch screen, which in this instance is mounted in the lighting racks, allows the clients to adjust the levels of any of the lights within the lighting scenes and store them on the switches.

Radio frequency remote controls and a colour touch screen in the cinema all from Universal Remote Controls provide a simple one-touch access to any of the entertainment systems within the house. The system is designed to be very simple to use both by the owners and their guests.
