Knightsbridge Apartment

The Challenge...

The apartment at Trevor Square, Knightsbridge, had been purchased by the client for investment purposes and to provide a London base for his family. The two bedroom apartment had recently undergone refurbishment and already had Lutron lighting control installed by the developer. It was also pre-wired for 7.1 surround in the reception room and for stereo in the master bedroom. However the client had some home entertainment requirements of his own.

Entertainment

The main living space room doubled as the prime TV and movie watching zone. To this end, a 61” plasma TV was installed complete with 7.1 surround sound for a full-on Hollywood-style experience.

In the master bedroom a 50” plasma with 5.1 surround sound was installed to provide a second cinema environment. The home entertainment was also extended to a bathroom TV in the master en-suite and a 42” plasma in the second bedroom. Two Denon cinema receivers provide the surround sound into the reception room and master bedroom, and a third Denon receiver provides the amplification for the second bedroom and en-suite bathroom. All music is stored on a Marantz hard-disk music server.

Two DVD players both with hard disks and DVD-R and a Sky box that can be accessed by any plasma screen in the apartment.

Additional cabling

The first job for Beyond the Invisible was to add the additional wiring into the apartment for the surround sound in the master bedroom and to install some additional accent lighting. Importantly, from the client’s point of view, all speakers needed to be concealed and the plasmas hung without any visible cables to create the ultimate in unobtrusive entertainment. While some of the cables had already been fitted by the original developer, other cabling needed to be added Structural work was required to hang the plasma screens as the single skin plaster board was inadequate for 80kg screens. All work had to be completed before the furniture arrived, so time was tight.

Crestron Control System

Crestron’s TPMC-10 wireless colour touch panel was chosen as the preferred user interface both for it’s ease-of-use and the level of control it provides.

There are a total of three Crestron TPMC wireless touchpanels that control the lighting and entertainment throughout the apartment. These stylish interfaces are designed to be easy to use: to watch something in the Master bedroom for example, you just need to pick up the panel, select Master Bedroom and chose from two DVD players, Sky or Freeview. At the same time you can dim the lights in the bedroom, turn off the lights and music in another part of the apartment – all from the same control panel.
