The client had already beautifully restored this house in one of the most prestigious squares in London before they turned their attention to the basement area. They realised that with some enlargement and remodelling the former extensive coal cellars at the front of the property could be converted into a luxurious spa complex. Beyond the Invisible were asked to provide a complete entertainment system for the area to encompass a waterproof television and speakers that could stand up to the environment. The spa included a steam room which was going to be a real challenge to any speaker. But Speakercraft's weathercraft series were up to the job. In other areas conventional ceiling and in-wall speakers could be used as these are already suitable for outdoor use. Beyond the Invisible also designed the lighting scheme throughout the complex, specifying and providing all of the light fittings. This was a real challenge as since the area was 'wet' under electrical regulations the only fittings that could be installed in many areas would normally be classed as exterior lights. The challenge was to find fittings that would meet the regulations without looking out of place inside. In the main whirlpool bath area a large fibre optic star curtain was installed. Due to the size of the area this had to be specially made for the property in Scotland. Each of 400 strands of fibre optic were carefully positioned between the joints in the mosaic tiles. A time consuming process but with spectacular results. With the main lighting on there is no evidence of the fibre optics, but dim the main lights and switch on the fibre optics and it is like taking a bath under starlight. Lighting control is provided by Clipsal's C-Bus lighting system. This allows sophisticated scenes of lighting to be set throughout the complex. More importantly because there are no mains voltages at the switches they can be installed in this area - something that could never have been achieved with conventional lighting. All the pictures on the right-hand side can be enlarged by clicking on them - they will open in a new window.
